Netflix released the official trailer for In Waves (2026) on October 20 — the first footage from an animated feature that has already made history on the festival circuit and represents one of the streamer's key awards titles this season.
Official trailerDirected by Phuong Mai Nguyen and animated by Gao Shan Pictures (I Lost My Body), the film adapts AJ Dungo's 2019 autobiographical graphic memoir with Will Sharpe and Stephanie Hsu voicing the central couple. The trailer traces their Los Angeles romance — skateboarding, surfing, and the Hawaiian cultural history Kristen shares with AJ — before hinting at the illness that tests them. The film became the first animated feature to open Cannes Critics' Week, then screened at Annecy and TIFF. It opens in select theaters November 27, 2026, and streams globally on Netflix December 11.
