Three cities. Three keynotes. One expansion. The promotional architecture Square Enix built around Final Fantasy XIV: Evercold — its sixth expansion to the decade-plus MMORPG — reached its final station today at Makuhari Messe in Chiba, Japan. Fan Festival 2026 in Tokyo runs October 31 through November 1, and the keynote that preceded the main event days — streaming free on the official FFXIV YouTube and Twitch channels from 11:00 a.m. JST Saturday — has already done what Tokyo keynotes are built to do: close the loop.

The circuit began in Anaheim, California on April 24–25, continued in Berlin on July 25–26, and concluded in Tokyo this Halloween weekend. Each stop was designed to parcel out the next expansion's identity in controlled increments: a cinematic reveal at one, a job reveal at the next, and a full release-date confirmation at the last. That structure held — mostly. The Tokyo keynote delivered the confirmation, the date, and a notable slip in the schedule that nobody had been promised but everyone was quietly bracing for.

What Anaheim Started

Evercold was announced at the North American Fan Festival in Anaheim, where producer and director Naoki Yoshida — universally known as Yoshi-P — unveiled a nearly four-and-a-half-minute cinematic trailer for the expansion alongside a January 2027 launch window. The expansion's central premise was also disclosed there: the main scenario of Evercold would be set on one of the game's parallel reflections, a dimension called The Fourth, launching what Yoshida framed as an entirely new story arc titled the Godless Realms Saga.

The Anaheim keynote also contained one of the more theatrical pieces of developer teasing in recent FFXIV history. During the Anaheim keynote, Yoshida wore a shirt featuring a character named Rhitahtyn Arvina, quietly telegraphing the expansion's first new job — a dual-greatshield main tank class that would be formally named at the next stop. The Evangelion crossover alliance raid, titled Ghosts of Desire, was also revealed in Anaheim, confirming that the 24-player raid tier for Evercold would be a collaboration with the Neon Genesis Evangelion franchise, whose 30th anniversary has made it an unavoidable cultural event in Japan.

What Berlin Confirmed

Berlin on July 25 answered the question Anaheim's shirt had posed. During the Fan Festival 2026 Berlin keynote, Yoshida revealed the first new job coming to Evercold: Bastion, a main tank wielding a pair of greatshields known as skyltborg. The shields are not passive armor — they can be flipped to alternate between claw-based melee attacks and long-range energy blasts, a mechanical concept that merges high-fantasy and mechanical aesthetics in ways that pushed back against the genre's conventional tank design. Bastion would start at level 90, with its job quest located in Limsa Lominsa, and — significantly — would only be playable in Evolved Mode, a new battle system framework that represents Evercold's most ambitious structural overhaul of FFXIV's combat layer in years.

Berlin also delivered the eight-player raid reveal. Final Fantasy VII Remake series director Naoki Hamaguchi joined the keynote to announce that the new eight-player raid collaboration would be called Beyond the Lifestream, a crossover with the remake trilogy. Sound director Masayoshi Soken also teased the second new job during a Berlin development panel — not with words, but with sound effects deliberately associated with that job's design — leaving Tokyo the job of making it official.

What Tokyo Just Delivered

Tokyo's keynote opened with the final version of the Evercold trailer before Yoshida delivered the news the community had been waiting for — and one piece it was not expecting. The expansion will now launch on February 23, 2027, with early access for pre-order holders beginning February 19 — a delay from the previously announced January 2027 window. Pre-orders open November 4. A benchmark tool for PC players, which will include the new character customization options, is scheduled for December.

The second new job is Zephyr: a physical ranged DPS class that wields a crossbow and an arcane bird familiar named Nephele. Zephyr starts at level 90, with its job quest located in Gridania, and like Bastion will only offer the Evolved battle mode. The two jobs together — a ground-anchored tank and a bird-commanding ranged attacker — frame Evercold's combat identity as something deliberately more theatrical than Dawntrail's (2024) comparatively grounded approach.

The Tokyo keynote also unveiled two new field zones: Sessrymnir, the Realmship of Earth, and Skiðblaðnir, the Realmship of Wind — massive airborne structures that expand on the Norse-inflected world architecture first glimpsed at Anaheim. A second player town, Hjartadunur, was shown alongside new dungeons and a new battle content format called the Gauntlet of Power. The expansion's alliance raid structure is also changing: Beyond the Lifestream, the FFVII Remake eight-player raid series, will include a new Fierce difficulty tier — a first for that content category. A collaboration with Neon Genesis Evangelion and a separate one with Final Fantasy VII Remake running simultaneously in the same expansion is, by any measure, an unprecedented dual-franchise flex from a studio that has historically been cautious about how much external IP it lets into its in-game world.

The event also confirmed an Evangelion collaboration that extends beyond the raid itself, with details to follow in future Producer Live Letters. And in a signal of where Square Enix sees FFXIV's platform future, a Nintendo Switch 2 version of the game launched in August — confirmed during Berlin — meaning the game is now on more platforms simultaneously than at any prior expansion launch.

The Architecture of a Modern MMORPG Launch

What the three-city Fan Festival circuit demonstrates, more than any individual reveal, is how Square Enix has industrialized the expansion announcement process. The Anaheim-Berlin-Tokyo rhythm is not new — the studio has followed this template for multiple expansion cycles — but Evercold's circuit has been unusually disciplined. Each city received one confirmed new job, one major raid revelation, and one structural feature deep-dive, with enough withheld to sustain conversation across the months between stops. The delay from January to February is the one unscripted variable: four weeks is not a catastrophic slip, but it tells you something about the complexity of shipping a combat system overhaul, two simultaneously revealed Evolved Mode jobs, and two separate IP crossover raids inside a single expansion.

The festival itself, occupying Makuhari Messe International Exhibition Halls 1 through 7, is a different kind of statement. The venue choice — the same complex that hosted fan gatherings in 2019, now expanded across seven halls — reflects a player community that has not contracted in the years since Dawntrail's mixed critical reception. THE PRIMALS perform on Day 2. Pianist Keiko takes the stage on Day 1, joined by guest Amanda Achen. Both concerts require paid stream tickets at 4,950 yen — the fan experience increasingly stratified between the free announcement spectacle and the premium cultural event layered on top of it.

Final Fantasy XIV: Evercold arrives February 23, 2027. The runway is now closed. What Square Enix has built across three continents and six months is not just a promotional campaign — it is a proof of concept that the world's busiest MMORPG still knows how to make its audience wait, and still knows how to make the wait feel earned.
